Doleful Lions to release "Monster Manual Song Cyclops" via WK this year.

This summer, we will be unveiling the first official Doleful Lions compilation 'Monster Manual Song Cyclops'. This record will be a 'best of' compendium of material from the two acclaimed 'Song Cyclops' records.

"Doleful Lions might continue to get back to their adventurous, dreamy and lush brand of rock. But for this album, they’ve returned to a timeless, surefire format that ages as well as a bottle of wine. And it’s an extremely expensive bottle, of course. " - PopMatters on Song Cyclops Vol. 2

Album art (yet to be unveiled) for this record will be a highly-anticipated artist collaboration between Pittsburgh comic paragons Little Tired and Nate McDonough.

Dig it.

March Update

I know that we've been an ephemeral presence in the past few months, but we are working on A LOT of new projects for 2012!

First, I'd like to talk a bit about Andre Costello.

The Pittsburgh native Costello finally has some new material on the 2012 horizon. He's joined forces with the perspicacious Ohio-based producer and songwriter, Sam Buonavolonta, to create a new full and vivid EP that will be introduced this summer.  In the mean time, you can catch him on the Wild Kindness Family GEMS Benefit Tour at these dates:

  • March 31st at Garfield Artworks (Pittsburgh, PA) - with Sun For Moon and Polar Scout
  • April 1st at Cedar's Lounge (Youngstown, OH) - with Nat Baldwin, Sun For Moon, The Building, Lee Boyle, Katelyn Gould and Little Tired.
  • May 5th at Union Pool (Brooklyn, NY) - with The Building, Sun For Moon and In One Wind

We also have pending arrangements for Chicago, Columbus, Philadelphia and Buffalo

Update

Hey everybody.

I know you haven't heard from us in a bit, but I promise that it is not due to lack of commitment. We are going throught some small changes (as you can see), as well as welcoming a new family member to our staff. I couldn't possibly envisage a better marriage than this new melding of Wild Kindness with Little Tired Press. This merging means a few things. Mostly, it means that we will have a lot of fun new DIY goods! It also means that we will now be representing and distributing media artists along with our musical talent!

Anyways, I will have more details soon, as well as some new swag.

In the mean time, sink your teeth into the FULL STREAM of the new conceptual C30 by our old pal D NTZ/

Indie rock alchemists Sam Goodwill are hard at work crafting their debut full length record, the follow up to 2009’s EP “Stampede”. “History” marks a culmination of years of live experience, rotating band members and musical soul searching. The band has started a Kickstarter campaign to fund the audio mastering and vinyl production of the new record. Frontman Sam Buonavolonta caught up with Matthew Anderson from Wild Kindness Records to discuss the new record, adaptation, and sneezing.

Matt: Your debut release "Stampede" seems to be a musical dichotomy of calculation and soulful expression. What kind of influences and experiences led you to this sound?

Sam: Stampede's sound is pretty parallel to a mood and/or temperature that sort of dominated me personally at the time that it was written. The songs were just ideas that simply developed...sometimes I have a hard time feeling responsible for how they turned out as a lot of the process was circumstantial or even accidental.

Matt: Some artists say those happy accidents end up
being the best ideas. Is that an approach that resonates with you at all?

Sam: If you experiment at all when you write music, you discover these accidents often. You'll probably also discover that for as many happy accidents there are, there are probably twice as many not-so-happy accidents. That's my experience anyway.

Matt: How would you describe your writing process?

Sam: There isn't really a formula...every song comes together in its own multifaceted way. I might get struck with a lyric or with a drum part for example…and I'll begin with that until I squeeze as much potential out of the idea as possible. I listen to the songs quite a bit while I'm writing them...I've always particularly loved that part, actually. Burning a disc of a few fresh ideas and going for a drive is one of my favorite things to do.

Matt: How does the new record respond to the sound of "Stampede"?

Sam: Appropriately I think. It's finishing the story that I began telling with Stampede, though sonically the two releases will be in completely different arenas. Dennis [Thomas: drums, additional instruments, background vocals] is engineering this record and we're tracking in multiple locations, as opposed to being in a basement by myself for 10 months recording Stampede. I'm enjoying this process a lot more I think...it seems healthier.

Matt: What is it about this new process that seems healthier?

Sam: There's something about spending that much time cooped up in a basement alone that seems terrible for you. Don't get me wrong though, I'm very fond of that time, I grew a lot as a musician and a producer. On the other hand I really like that there's more sunlight and conversation working on this record with Dennis at ground level.

Matt: How would you describe the sound of the new record?

Sam: One of the places that we're tracking is the warehouse where Dennis lives…It’s a nice sized area so the record has a lot of room in it. It’s also vulnerable to Dennis's roommate's dog barking at us, or his other roommate sneezing profusely. The microphones are picking up all sorts of great sounds.

Matt: How has the format of your live show developed into what it is today?

Sam: Basically, we were a four-piece and now we're a two-piece and that transition happened literally overnight. The limitations were obvious and a bit overwhelming at first, but we wanted to challenge them before we accepted them. We restructured the songs and adopted methods of looping; both of us play multiple instruments at the same time. Some of the songs actually translated so well that we're recording the adapted versions on this upcoming record.

Matt: Adaptation is kind of an interesting tension in the music world.
Some artists avoid it at all costs while others embrace it. Have you learned
anything through the experience of condensing a four-piece band into a two-piece?

Sam: Yes, I've learned to embrace it...you can plan and prepare all you want, but sometimes, if you want to keep doing what you love, you have to walk through some dark doorways in which you have no idea what's on the other side. In the first meeting that I had with Brendon Massei [founder of The Epiphysis Foundation], he said that "anything is possible if you're open to anything being possible." I think I find more truth in that the more dark doorways that I walk through. It’s weird though, Now that we're a two-piece it feels like we have unknowingly joined some sort of club...it’s just shy of a secret handshake with some other two-piece bands. I think it’s wonderful, but I don't know how long we'll stay as a two-piece. It's one of those things that we're completely open to change about.

So there you have it. Now that you've ready this, I know you are aching to give Sam Goodwill all of your wallet's contents. Do that here:

The Witch Hazel Sound

Witch Hazel Sound box set announced! Details later. FREE SINGLE available now ( HERE )

"Equal parts studio rat and record-collecting junkie, Witch Hazel Sound maestro Kevin Coral plays music because he has no choice in the matter. A hopeless devotee of more musical influences than you’ve had Hungry Man TV dinners, Coral astutely applies the lessons he’s learned from the charts of John Barry, Francis Lai, and Ennio Morricone. Labeling the results a hearty blend of obscure Canterbury band and Caravan and early Chicago Transit Authority, though accurate, would be as myopic as describing coq au vin as chicken and wine. Like Lovin’ Spoonful guru John Sebastian, Coral believes in the magic of rock ‘n’ roll. Aided by the fey tenor of vocalist/lyricist Mark F., the trumpet of Jason Richardson and a battery of vintage synthesizers and guitars acquired by Coral at various garage sales, “Music Becomes Vibration” shimmers like the legendary Seven Golden Cities Of Cibolla as sighted by a feverish Francisco Coronado. Blue City, on the other hand, breathes in the rarefied air if Neil Young’s “Expecting To Fly” and exhales it as some gaseous vapor unique to Coral’s vision. Coral wraps up his band’s magnum opus with the understated “The Boy With Green Hair,” a Miles Davis-like trumpet/piano excursion he and Richardson cooked up in the studio minutes after watching a VH-1 special on Davis’ arranger Gil Evans. The song is the after-dinner mint to a perfect meal.”
