Katie Gould brings to life the haunted images of her subjects, often portraits of a nearly forgotten era, exposing a despair that was unintentionally hidden in their eyes. Not limited to simply portraits, she has worked in every medium from graphic design to set design (which she studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh), currently focusing on painting and ceramics as a student of YSU. Some of her various influences – including Kahlo, de Lempicka, Degas, Basquiat and Swoon to name a few – are evident in the spirit of her work, as each and every detail carefully constructs a distinct mood and feeling. Her obsession with black and white photographs, high contrast Renoir films like Nana, Louise Bourgeois’ spiders, the description of anything rotting, rabbits, surface textures, death, ants, among other things are all in display in works ranging from ceramic sculptures to charcoal drawings to sketches on wood.
